Random letter generator

Random letter generator

Spin for a random letter from A to Z. Perfect for word games, name prompts, and spelling practice, with an even chance for every letter.

Fair by design: each spin draws from your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, giving every entry an equal 1-in-26 chance. No server is involved.

One entry per line. 26 entries on the wheel.

The entries travel in the part of the link after the #, which browsers never send to a server. Nobody, including us, can read a shared wheel from a log.

Please keep the attribution link on the last line. It is the only thing we ask in return, and it is what pays for the wheel being free.

A random letter for games and prompts

A single random letter is the seed for a surprising number of games. Spin one and start a round of categories, where players race to name a food, a country, and an animal that begins with it. Word game fans use it for Scattergories and boggle-style challenges, and teachers use it for phonics warm-ups and spelling drills. Writers spin it to pick a starting letter for a character name or a story title when the blank page will not budge.

Every letter has a fair chance

All 26 letters sit on the wheel with equal odds, so even the tricky ones like Q, X, and Z come up their fair share over a session, which keeps games from getting stale around the easy letters. Because each spin is independent, a letter is never “due” and can repeat, so remove a letter after it is drawn if you want a run of different ones. Want only vowels, only consonants, or a weighted set toward common letters? Edit the list in the box and the wheel adjusts instantly.

Generator or wheel, your choice

This page and the random letter wheel spin across the same A to Z alphabet; use whichever framing you prefer. For picking names or numbers instead of letters, try the random name picker or the random number generator. Everything runs in your browser, so you can set up a custom letter set before class and have it ready on screen.

Frequently asked questions

How does the random letter generator work?

It puts all 26 letters on a wheel and spins to land on one at random, each with an equal 1 in 26 chance. The winning letter is shown in large text when the wheel stops.

Can I generate only vowels or only consonants?

Yes. Edit the entry box to keep just the letters you want, for example A, E, I, O, U for vowels, and the wheel spins across only those.

Can it pick more than one letter?

Spin as many times as you need. To avoid repeats, remove each letter after it is drawn using Remove and re-spin.

Is it good for games like Scattergories?

It is ideal. Spin for the round's letter and everyone races to name a food, place, or animal that starts with it, with no arguments over who chose the letter.
