When to spin the Months of the Year Wheel
A random month is a handy little generator for planners and players alike. Writers spin it to set the season of a scene or to get a prompt like describe a memory from the month it lands on. 12 slices: odds, streaks and repeats
Each of the 12 slices wins a spin 1 in 12, or 8.3%. That sounds rare, yet repeats arrive early: by spin 5 the chance that some entry has already come up twice passes 50%, the same maths as the birthday problem. Landing on every one of them, from January to December, takes about 37 spins on average, which is why a no-repeat round is the quicker way to work through the whole list.
Tips for spinning it in front of a group
- With 12 slices of 30° each, even the longest label, "September", prints large enough to read from the back of a room. Press Present for a full-screen wheel: Space or Enter spins and Esc returns to the page.
- Tick Remove after pick and each winner leaves the wheel: 12 spins work through all 12 entries with none drawn twice, and Reset round puts January and the rest back.
- To favour one, write "January *2": it then lands 15.4% of the time and every other slice 7.7%.
