What a d8 is for
The eight-sided die is the standard one-handed weapon die in Dungeons & Dragons: longswords, rapiers, warhammers and light crossbows all deal 1d8. It is also the hit die for several classes, including clerics, druids, monks and rogues, so it comes up at level up as well as in combat. Each face has a one in eight chance, 12.5 percent, and the average roll is 4.5.
Versatile weapons: d8 or d10
Many d8 weapons are versatile: swing a longsword with one hand for 1d8, or with both hands for 1d10.
